Child's play is an important activity for child development since it improves cognition, emotional, and physical aspects. Games can also be explored as an educational resource. Starting from the understanding that playfulness is a subjective process, this work has investigated the relationship to the knowledge stablished during games, aiming to understand it in its epistemic, social, and identitary dimensions. A group of 16 5th grade students were interviewed from a script based on the instrument "balance of knowledge," as proposed by Bernard Charlot. The questions were adapted to enable the apprehension of what children say they learn on the games they play, emphasizing those which are played in classrooms. The results of the content analysis performed have showed that, despite the conflicts on how both playful and educative functions are stablished when child's play is used as a pedagogic resource, the subjects can identify benefits on the process of learning with it. The need to consider the child's social condition in the school environment to reach success when using these activities as pedagogical practices is also pointed out.(AU)

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between severe mental illness (SMI), general health symptoms, mental wellbeing, and different activity levels in patients with SMI. METHOD: Consecutive patients with SMI referred for occupational therapy were prospectively included. Their hours of activities per day during hospital stay were recorded as <1 hour, 1-3 hours, and >3 hours in three categories: basic self-care activities, interest-based activities, and role-specific activities. Patients were free to join or decline any activities. Patients' somatic and mental health were measured at admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Chinese version of Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (C-SWEMWBS), and Chinese version of General Activity Motivation Measure (GAMM). RESULTS: 84 patients (35 men and 49 women) aged 16 to 63 years were assessed at the three timepoints. The mean length of hospital stay of current admission was 74.73 days. The most common diagnosis was schizophrenia (n=35), followed by depression (n=15), psychosis (n=14), bipolar affective disorder (n=10), others (n=8), and delusional disorder (n=2). The hours of activities per day was <1 hour in 32 (38.1%) patients, 1-3 hours in 34 (40%) patients, and >3 hours in 18 (21.2%) patients. Improvement in somatic and mental health was positively associated with hours of activities per day. Activities were associated with reduced psychiatric symptoms (measured by BPRS) at discharge (Z = 5.978, p < 0.01). Activities were associated with less somatic complaints (measured by PHQ-15) [χ2 = 23.478, p < 0.01], better sleep quality (measured by PSQI) [χ2 = 14.762, p < 0.01]. The BPRS score for psychiatric symptoms at discharge was inversely associated with C-SWEMWBS score for mental wellbeing (r = -0.233, p = 0.033) and C-GAMM score for activity motivation (r = -0.258, p = 0.018). Basic self-care activities were a predictor for psychiatric symptoms (measured by BPRS) at discharge (adjusted R2 = 0.091, F = 8.496, p = 0.005), whereas a combined group of badminton and Tai Chi was a predictor for general activity motivation (measured by GAMM) at 1 month after discharge (adjusted R2 = 0.047, F = 4.697, p < 0.05), and soccer alone was a predictor for somatic health (measured by PHQ-15) at 1 month after discharge (adjusted R2 = 0.06, F = 5.784, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Participating in activities of patients' own choice and interests is positively associated with patients' psychiatric and somatic health and subjective wellbeing. Outdoor soccer has added effect on patients' somatic health. The beneficial effects are maintained at 1 month after discharge. Daily participation of activity meaningful to patients can be a non-pharmacological treatment for patients with SMI to improve somatic and mental health.

RESUMEN

This case series describes two patients, aged 35 and 45 years, respectively, who presented with chronic nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) having exercise addiction (EA) behaviors. Diagnosis of EA was based on clinical findings, exercising patterns and withdrawal symptoms along with high scores in the EA inventory. This report is a potential first-time description of the successful physical therapy management of NSLBP associated with EA utilizing pain neuroscience education (with individualized curriculum), mindfulness, breathing, quota-based reduction in exercises and modification of exercises into social participation, pleasure activities and hobbies. Both the patients were seen once a week, for 8 weeks. At discharge, they were pain-free and fully functional, which was maintained at a six-month follow-up.

RESUMEN

We report about a 44-year old patient with severe acute hepatitis E after herbage walking-to ur. Transmission occurred with ingestion of contaminated herbs. Symptoms were jaundice, dark urine, rheumatic pains and distinctive fatigue. We could document a benign self-limiting course under regular clinical controls. Hepatitis Eisa worldwide common cause for acute hepatitis with jaundice. In Switzerland contamination of this autochthonic infection is aquired by consumption of pork and venison (seroprevalence up to 22%). Infection can be without symptoms but also can result in acute liver failure. Extrahepatic symptoms are not uncommon.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to examine how craft makers describe the meaning of craft as an activity in relation to their well-being. The study is based on an analysis of the written narratives of 92 textile craft makers aged 16 to 84. Based on the results, the well-being enhancing nature of craft as a meaningful occupation for those interested in crafting is evident. The significance of craft making as an occupation is described by the following three themes: (a) "the meaning and value of crafts", (b) "the feelings experienced during craft activity", and (c) "the holisticity and intentionality of craft-making". As an activity and a metaphor, craft making helped the participants to adjust to life situations. Elements of craft that enhance well-being can be traced to both the artefacts and the sense of achievement gained in producing them. The effects of craft include personal growth, development of physical and cognitive skills, control of one's body, thoughts, and feelings, as well as cultural and social awareness. The results indicate that the participants noticed the significance of craft as an agony- and stress-reducing and mind-calming activity. Holistic craft and ordinary craft played different roles in maintaining well-being.

RESUMEN

The knowledge embraced within the broad field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) represents an important part of our common human heritage, as it incorporates time-tested and viable health promotion approaches applicable to everyone, regardless of ethnicity and geographic location. TCM emphasizes the importance of increased self-consciousness, which, once achieved, becomes regular aspect of daily life. Cultivating life energies in order to prevent and treat disease lies at the heart of TCM. This paper provides a brief introduction to TCM life energy cultivation strategies for nurse reference.

RESUMEN

Common ivy (Hedera helix L.) is a ubiquitous plant in Europe whose major allergen falcarinol has moderate allergic potential. It is not related to poison ivy (Toxicodendron spp.). There are no cross reactions between the allergens of common ivy (falcarinol) and poison ivy (urushiol). Contact with common ivy or falcarinol may lead to sensitization and then a delayed hypersensitivity reaction. There are only few cases described in the literature. We report on a male hobby gardener with appropriate clinical history and positive patch test. The pathogenic mechanism is a type IV reaction following a sensitization exposure. Gardeners and landscape architects with frequent exposure to common ivy and thus a high risk of sensitization should wear appropriate protective clothing.

RESUMEN

Apperception constructs functional and "meaningful" mental representations. These representations are often built on mental images. Hence it is rational to assume that the contents of some parts of images may be functionally more important than others. This means that the cognitive processing of some parts of the image is more effective than for others. To extract this preferential structure, which we call the functional figure in mental images, five experiments were conducted on blindfold chess imagery. We showed that blindfold chess players have much better recall of functionally significant than of functionally insignificant areas of chess positions. Thus, of the various mental representations of chess board areas, the functionally more significant areas are better represented than others.

RESUMEN

Patchwork and quilting can be part of holistic care to clients and their loved ones. Nurses can encourage clients to use these skills to promote health and divert their attention from their illness. They can also encourage clients' loved ones to make commemorative quilts. Such strategies will help to enhance the emotional and spiritual side of nursing.

RESUMEN

Despite acknowledgment that pain is likely to be a major problem for many older adults, it is difficult to estimate the frequency of pain problems for this population. The main purpose of this study was to identify the various characteristics of chronic pain in the elderly by gender. It examines by gender, pain frequency, pain intensity, number of chronic pain sites, localization of pain, impact on activities, methods of pain management, and effects of chronic pain management. The subjects were 189 elderly people(65 years and older) living in an urban area. They were surveyed at their homes. They were surveyed by interview using a closed-ended questionnaire. The survey was done from Nov. 6th. to Dec. 6th. 1997. Descriptive statistics were used to determine all of the reported pain variables. Chi-square tests were used to determine crude differences between pain intensity and gender. T-test was used to determine differences in number of pain sites between men and women. The findings are as follows ; Of the 189 subjects, 83.6% reported experiencing pain, and men reported a lower prevalence(69.5%) than women(89.2%). Women had significantly more severe pain than did men(p=.001). Lower back pain(20.2%) and leg pain(20.2%) were the most prevalent, followed by knee pain(17.4%), arm pain(13.3%), neck and shoulder pain(11.6%), and headache(9.9%). Women experienced more multiple localizations of pain(p=.0001). The greatest impact was on movement(83.5%), followed by usual activities(60.8%), sleep(49.4%), visiting(29.1%), and hobbies and recreations(50.0%). No differences were observed between men and women in the proportion of subjects reporting a negative impact on each of these activities. The methods of pain management were hospital visit(70.9%), drug store medication(46.7%), oriental medicine clinic(32.9%), endurance(13.3%), self-management(6.3%). Drug therapy was the most effective pain management strategy(94%), followed by physical therapy(63%) and accupuncture byssocausis(55%). The conclusion: Pain is a symptom of great clinical importance that is often associated with disability, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life. In this study chronic pain symptoms were common but unevenly distributed in men and women. The results further advance understanding of the experience and impact of pain by gender. Future studies should incorporate questions that gather systemic and more detailed information on the characteristics of pain, expecially by gender and by age.
